The
tape is called Dragon Quest: The Legend of Abel Volume 1. The quality
of the tape is perfect. To my surprise it's subtitled in English.
The first thing you notice is that the sound is muffled and there
isn't much music. The US version really did a good job with adding
more DQ and other mood music. Abel's voice isn't much different from
the dub. Like many female anime cast members, Tialah and Daisy's voices
are high pitched. I think the dub voices fit them better. MokoMoko
is pretty much the same as is Moor. Yanak is ok. Again, I think the
dub voice fits him a little better. There was more emotion rather
than just reading the lines. One interesting thing the US company
added were more lines for Baramos. He really didn't speak much. When
he was around the only thing you heard was "Hmmm". They
also changed the voices of the slimes. In the Japanese versions they
don't make much noise and when they do they're high pitched squeals.
Some more differences between US and Japanese versions is most of
the blood was edited out. In Episode Two when Moor tries to grab the
red stone from Tialah it burns off his hand. Since US shows have two
commercial breaks and Japanese shows just have one, there are a couple
of minor scenes that were edited out for time.
The tape is 100
minutes. The first episode is full and uncut. The second episode goes
right to Abel getting the blue stone and visiting the King of Aliahan.
The fight at Aliahan Village, the Daisy cameo, and the fight at the
castle are all cut. The meeting with Yanak is the only part of the
third episode. Only half of the fourth episode is present. Episodes
5-9 are cut. There is about five minutes of Episode 10. Episode 11
and 12 are told in about 10 minutes. About half of Episode 13 is shown.
The final episode on the tape is 3/4 of Episode 14. The bridge at
the end of Episode 13 is called the Gate of the Straits. Baramos and
Moor reach the bridge and place Tialah on the side for the red stone.
A beam of light revealed where the Dragon God is located and where
to revive it. Baramos gets a vision of Estark (Escouta in the US)
and decides to return. When he flies off, he destroys the bridge.
He left Mour there and told him to get Abel's Golden Key. The four
reach the bridge and see that it's been trashed. They find a hidden
passage that is opened with the Golden Key. They see a blue pillar
of water that Abel falls into. When Abel falls into the water, it
reveals the same instructions that Baramos and company had received.
One side was for the Red Stone and one side was for the blue.
And that was it.
It's to my understanding that there are no tapes of the full episodes.
The only volumes out there are the condensed ones. The VCD set that
pops up on eBay are transfers of these. I'll do my best to find more!
