Also added many quicksearch tags. We think it's our the nice. =Version 0.1 - 30 December 2006= (Original) ========================================================================== =INTRODUCTION=======================================================IDX01= ========================================================================== This is the foundation of a translation from Japanese into English of the recently-released Square-Enix BRPG Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker. Currently it only contains a translation of the manual, menus and early areas of the game, but these should still be of some use to importers unable to read Japanese. This guide is best viewed in a word processor that can display Japanese characters (I recommend JWPce - see http://www.physics.ucla.edu/~grosenth/japanese.html). However, as many people will be viewing it using a browser or text editor without this functionality, I have designed it to remain perfectly usable as ASCII only. Without the ability to view Japanese characters, all you will lose are the original names of some terms and menu items that are useful for quick reference and basic menu navigation for those with no understanding of Japanese at all. If the following set of characters is displayed on a single line and the characters are of a uniform size, you can view ASCII correctly:- `1234567890-+!"£$%^&*()_+ []{};:'@#~\|,.<>/?ASDFGHJKLZXCVBNMqwertyuiopasdf If the following characters are displayed as Japanese script rather than random ASCII symbols, digits, square boxes, etc, you can view hiragana and katakana correctly:- あいうえおしゃしょしゅはばぱアイウエオシャシュショハバパ My Japanese is quite limited (one of the reasons I took on this project was to improve it) and I have never translated anything nearly as lengthy before, so there may be some errors. While I accept full responsibility for these (don't blame SE if I misinterpret their ideas) the reader should use the information in the guide at his own risk. Of course, I welcome any corrections or critiques of passages where the English meaning is unclear. www.gamefaqs.com is currently the only website with permission to host this guide. If you see it elsewhere, or believe it would be an appropriate addition to your 'site (and you are prepared to update it regularly from the GameFAQs master file) please e-mail me. ========================================================================== =MANUAL=============================================================IDX02= ========================================================================== Tags such as [Blue] and [Red] denote the colour of text and captions, making it simpler to co-ordinate the content in this FAQ with the original text in the manual. As the manual itself explains, screenshots and captions in red refer to content displayed on the upper screen, while those in blue refer to the lower (touch) screen. If you search '=PAGE X=', you can go directly to...page X. =PAGE 2=================================================================== STORY Granpool Archipelago...in this region of the world's ocean, there exists a vast archipelago where tournaments are held to decide who is the strongest Monster Master. Many monsters inhabit these islands, with the central island of Alcapolis being the tournament headquarters. Monster Masters from across the world have now gathered on this island. With your eye on becoming the greatest Monster Master of all, you set out on an adventure... =PAGE 3=================================================================== CONTENTS Characters in the Adventure 4 Basic Controls 6 How to Start and Discontinue the Adventure 9 Exploring Granpool Archipelago 12 G Pit: The Adventure Base 14 Interface and Command Input 20 When Battle Begins... 26 About Skills and Abilities 32 Ability List 34 Let's Combine Monsters 36 DS Wireless Communication 40 Wi-Fi Communication 46 =PAGE 4=================================================================== CHARACTERS - Characters in the Adventure =Main Character (You)= He views his opponents with a penetrating gaze. Though unkempt, he wears many personal accessories, and the glowing ring on his middle finger is undoubtedly the 'Scout Ring', evidence of a Monster Master. It is said that he is the Monster Master chosen by the gods - but can this really be true!? =Spedio= This white wolf cub's head and body are covered by protective armour. While Spedio appears to be a lowly beast, he is descended from a line of legendary monsters. It is said that this monster, who can use the words of humans, has a special reason to accompany the hero on his journey... =PAGE 5=================================================================== =Guiltz= The commander of the Nazo-based organisation 'Gaol', which is known to almost all inhabitants of the Granpool Archipelago. He has a stern personality and the members of his organisation inspire fear. =Aroma= A girl from Nazo and a challenger in the tournament. Speaking in a rather too-familiar manner in her first encounter with our hero, she wilfully claims to be his rival. =Kalmasso= Serving as the chairman of the Battle GP organisation, he is in charge of the tournament. Moreover, as a renowned doctor, he invented the Scout Ring. He has a strong interest in monsters, but what is his true reason for organising the Battle GP? =PAGE 6=================================================================== GAME CONTROLS - Basic Controls Here, the control system for adventuring in Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker will be explained. Combining After the monsters have been combined and the new monster has been born, you can name it. Please be aware that both parents are used up in the combination process. =PAGE 39================================================================== [Blue] 4. Choose the Skills to Inherit You can select up to three skills for the baby monster, either inherited from his parents or entirely new. Compare information on the skills in detail when choosing them. Finish by deciding whether to add the newly- born monster to your party or sent it to the creche. [Blue] Advice on Combining When combining, losing two experienced monsters may seem like a bad things, but if the new monster succeeds its parents at an appropriate time, it may become stronger. If you want to become the strongest Monster Master of all, use combinations effectively and train only the strongest monsters. =PAGE 40================================================================== WIRELESS MENU - DS Wireless Communication When you select 'DS ワイヤレスつうしん DS Wireless Communication' from the start menu, you can enjoy competing with and trading monsters with your friends. Then both can be dispatched. Monster received in a trade are placed in the creche. =PAGE 45================================================================== [Blue] Random Battles When you interact data with a friend or another player, battle data is automatically exchanged. * It is not possible for legendary monsters to participate. [Blue] 1. In a G Pit, select 'すれちがいバトル Random Battle' from the G Pit Information Desk menu. [Blue] 2. If you pass by a player in the same status, you will automatically receive his monster data to fight against. During the battle, you can also scout your opponent's monsters (if the scout is successful, you can take the monster). * While in Random Battle Mode, partners can still find your data even if your DS hardware is closed. * While in Random Battle Mode, the game may be automatically saving data, so please don't cut power to the DS. [Blue] 3. When Random Battle Mode is running, touching the lower screen or pressing and button will suspend it. * Monsters received by scouting in random battles or the offspring of such monsters will have a 'GUEST' mark attached to them. "... ... ... ...." * The camera pans over the disinterested hero. It turns to frame the face of man in black * "Why not? Are you so satisfied here in the Row? If you won't leave, it seems you're not all that different from Lord Guiltz, mate. It looks like nothing'll change your mind. Anyway, where was I? Gaol's orders are absolute, and they apply to EVERYBODY. Even, for instance, the son of Lord Guiltz..." * The hero reluctantly gets up * =GAOL HQ: GUILTZ'S STUDY= Guiltz: "Ten days ago, wasn't it? From now on, there'll be no more running away. Regarding the matter of appearing in the Battle GP... Hmm, I suppose you might argue that the transgression you committed was fairly minor. Is that right? Well, I'll permit you to appear in it, my friend...but this is an exception! We'll see if you can behave yourself this time. You must be aware that many competitors in the tournament use their position as merely a front for illegal activities. Ranking highly is fine, but you absolutely must abide by my command. That's all. Take this." ----- received the Scout Ring. Guiltz: "...And still you say nothing. The value of this accessory is that you can use it to befriend monsters. The Battle GP opening ceremony should be held today. After your preparations are complete, go to the Alcapolis assembly hall. ...Chop chop, eh? Get moving." (You now have control of the main character.) Guiltz: "At the time I formed Gaol, I made laid important plans. Only now can their content be expressed. But they are vital to the future of the commoners...that's all I'll say." Man in Black 1: "The Battle GP meeting place is on Alcapolis Island. Go there from the jetty underneath." Man in Black 2: "Although you're Lord Guiltz's son, you've disobeyed his orders, causing him no end of trouble! That's two times now you've defied him." Bookshelf: These books have particularly peculiar contents... =GAOL HQ: QUARTERS= *Cutscene* Master: "Oh! Is it a Battle Rex? I haven't seen that in the laboratory's library. It's amazing...the number of samples there is incredible." "Is that all you duty requires of you? Merely earnestly catching monsters..." Master: "Gaol is...have you no confidence in Lord Guiltz? You know better than I do, but...we are helping to lay the foundations for Lord Guiltz's plan. The day in which it will be executed draws near. Now we must trust in Lord Guiltz." "Yes..." *End Cutscene* Blue-haired Man 2: "Oh, if it isn't -----? So you've finally been granted permission to leave? WHAT!? A mission to the Battle GP? Not half bad... I bet you're only going there to escape Gaol, though, eh?" Helmet-wearing Man: "Battle GP...that's the tournament held to decide the strongest monster master, right? Eh? And you're gonna' enter and win it!? Never heard anything about that! I don't get it at all..." Man in Black 2: "My future looks pretty rosy thanks to Lord Guiltz's plan. You must know that your mission is supporting it this time. Nice to see you're not ashamed to be working as his son for once." * Man in Black 3 appears out of nowhere and stops -----, blocking a stairway that leads downwards * Man in Black 3: "And where do you think you're going? The lab downstairs has nothing to do with your job, mate. You'd better give the job you were LUCKY enough to get from Lord Guiltz your undivided attention." Blue-haired Woman: "I'm not privy to the details of Lord Guiltz's plan, but...bein' the master's son and all, haven't you heard anything?" ->Yes "Sorry. Forget I said anything. It must be awkward for you to talk to Lord Guiltz." ->No "Oh really? It didn't seem like you two talked about ordinary things..." Blue-haired Man 3: "I feel sorry for you. Everybody knows you as the son of Gaol's lord. But still being bossed around him, you must be so lonely. At least you've out of that ten days in solitary now!" Blonde Man: "Gaol is an organisation that researches the ecology of monsters. So we definitely need lots of monsters around, but...the laboratory is already overflowing with the ones we've already collected!" South Exit - Take the elevator to the HQ's jetty? (Weak exit leads to the mountainside outside.) =GAOL HQ: WESTERN PEAKS= Blue-haired Man 1: "Ah, little master! Nice to meet you. I'm a rookie; just joined Gaol. It's my job to catch monsters that can be used for research. You know about the monster lab here, right? No? I'm trying to find out more myself. It may not look like it, but I don't hear anything from Lord Guiltz. *Sigh* I'm just a grunt..." Yellow Monster - This species is the 'デンデンりゅう (Shell Dragon)'. There are probably other monsters of this type held in the laboratory downstairs... Blue-haired Man 2: "On a fine day like this, you can really, clearly see 'モルボンバ島 Molbonba Island', can't you? You know there are seven big islands 'round here, right? And that all kinds of different monsters roam around on each of them?" Girl in Pigtails: "Why don't you and Lord Guiltz get on, -----? You ARE really related...aren't you? Maybe you'd get on better with MY daddy!" =GAOL HQ: JETTY= Blue-haired Man: "Excuse me. Could I have a moment? I understand you created quite a disturbance when you ran away. And now you're working for us. Surprising you got permission. But I think I get it. Allowing you to enter the Battle GP might satisfy your desire for independence..." Blond Man: "By leaving here and becoming a master, you'll be satisfied...yes, I understand. It looks like you'll be able to enjoy your independence while training as a master, doesn't it!" Blue-haired Woman: "You got what you were after pretty easily, eh, escapee! So Lord Guiltz granted you your wish of entering the Battle GP...well, his orders are only in place to help you." Helmet-wearing Man: "Hang on a sec, -----. If you leave the HQ, you won't be able to return until you've completed your mission. So, are you sure you're ready to depart now?" About Battle GP: It is a tournament held to determine who is the greatest monster master. =ALCAPOLIS ISLAND DOCKS=================================================== Brunette Woman: "This is the first time you've visited this island, isn't it? Well welcome to the big city, little one! This is Alcapolis Island. I pride myself on helping out the country folks, you know?" Blue-haired Man 1 (in alley): "You might want to check the island map before leaving an area. Maybe you think you've seen everything, but...at the last second, you could notice something else! Keep trying to find new things." Blue-haired Man 2: "What, a kid? You're not seriously thinking of entering the Battle GP, are you mate? Stop it, you're killing me! The Battle GP is a tourney used to decide the strongest master. It's no playground for kids like you. Go home to mama!" Blonde Man 1: "Hey, don't bother talking to me! I only want to hear about Lord Guiltz, alright? What's the point? I doubt you've even heard of Gaol. That's all you've going to get out of me now. And don't come back!" Blonde Man 2: "A master should always keep an eye on the condition of his monsters. View the status of monsters in detail. To be explicit about it, use the X Button or the touchscreen. Understand?" Blonde Man 3: "Preparations for the tournament's opening ceremony have fallen behind up on the plaza. What on Earth is the problem? This is the first time anything like this has ever happened. I've got a bad feeling about the tournament this time..." Helmet-wearing Man: "Got a minute, God? You'll allow me my rightful place as victor of the tournament, I presume?" (Try to go up steps.) Brunette Man in Suit: "We're still preparing for the Battle GP opening ceremony, right now. I'm afraid that nobody competing in the tournament can yet ascend to the plaza. My apologies; this situation is truly inexcusable." Blue-haired Woman: "Hang on a sec! I wanna go in too, but they haven't finished preparing yet. I'm gonna visit the shrine before the tourney starts..." Brunette Woman 2: "Veteran trainers are accompanied by monsters they've raised themselves, of course. Your fine party, on the other hand, is just pathetic... You really plan to enter the GP Tournament? You're not just a regular guy, are you? Either that, or you're a regular idiot!" Try to cross planks: Crates are in the way =BAR URQUHART============================================================= Helmet-wearing Man: "Teeheehee...welcome! Welcome to Bar Urquhart! <3 I'll serve you and everyone in your party. Loads of masters entering the 'GP come in here, so there'll be plenty of hot goss for you!" Blonde Man: "You're also participating in the GP for the first time?" ->Yes No "Ah, I thought so! It's the same for me. Pretty tough when there are so many new things to learn, right? So why not try visiting the neighbouring Novice Island to practice scouting and battling?" Yes ->No "Oh...? Is that right? But you don't quite exude an aura of sophistication... This is my first time entering, so there are a lot of things I don't understand about it. I'd better visit the neighbouring Novice Island to practice scouting and battling..." Blue-haired woman: "Whaaaat!? You've only got ONE monster? And you're entering the 'GP? You've got plenty to do before it start and it's almost too late... Masters entering the tournament bring THREE monsters with them - surely everyone knows that! Before the opening ceremony gets underway, you'd better catch some monsters from some of the other islands, don't you think?" Blue-haired Man: "The Battle GP's a race. First battler to the goal wins. The winner's chosen from the five top-ranked battlers. Those five battle it out, you see? There are seven rounds, in all. Of course, only the winners advance!" =Exiting Alcapolis Island= (Speak to the blonde woman wearing a suit by the pier.) Blonde Woman: "Down these stairs is a jet-bike you can use to get to Novice Island. The Battle GP still hasn't started, so why not take a look around there? The thing is, we're still preparing for the opening ceremony... I'm afraid we'll have to have to keep you waiting a little while longer, so there's plenty of time for a trip. There's a shrine on the island with a stone monument; masters entering the 'GP often visit it. You might also be able to hear something interesting at Novice Island's G- Pit. It's just a small 'Pit, quite different from the tournament headquarters, but you can still save your game there like any other 'Pit!" * The blonde woman steps aside * Chart: Novice Island - Danger Rating: F "Populated by many weaker monsters, this island is a great place for those just starting out." Everybody says seeing the stone monument within the shrine is well worth it!" Blonde Man: "A single-monster party seems pretty unreliable, if you ask me. If you're in that situation, you'd better start scouting. When you encounter a monster you want in battle, use the Scout command! But I reckon you'll need a lot of patience if the monster doesn't like you. If the scout is a failure, I suppose you'll have to level up your party and try again..." When the 'GP begins, you can start using this service, so please wait patiently for the time-being!" Door: You need a key for this door. =ALCAPOLIS: FIELD========================================================= (You knew it would happen sooner or later...) Slime appeared! =BATTLE MENU============================================================== Starting Battle -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ->Attack (Party member 1) Give Orders Tactics (Party member 2) Scout (Enemies) Items (Party member 3) Run * Attacking is automated via the tactics system, so you just watch damage being inflicted, etc. Pretty obvious. * Giving orders: the options I've seen are:- こうげき Attack ぼうぎょ Defend ためる Accumulate - Accumulate tension power Issue them, select a target (if necessary) and choose 'Attack' from the main battle menu to execute them. Your monsters may choose to ignore direct orders if you only captured them recently or they've been left in the creche for a long time. * Selecting tactics:- ガンガンにこうぜ Go for It!! - By spending MP, the monster will attack the enemy with the greatest force possible. いろいろやろうぜ Try All Kinds of Things! - While using support skills, the monster attack the opponent in a variety of different ways. いのちだいじに Take Care of Yourself - The monster will devote itself to recovering HP and protecting itself. とくぎつかうな Don't Use Skills - The monster will attack without using skills. つよさをみる View Status - View the monster's status. Read the manual section for more information on the tactics system if you don't understand it. * Scouting: this is how you catch monsters in DQM: Joker. All of the monsters in the party will attack the target you choose using a 'mysterious power'. The stronger the attack, the more chance that the scout will succeed (shown on-screen as a percentage) forcing that monster to join you. If the monster is captured, you'll go through the naming procedure again, before seeing this screen:- Add to Party? -------------------------------------------------------------------------- ->Add to Party Make (new monster) a member of -----------------------------------------the current party. Send to Creche Send (new monster) to the creche. ----------------------------------------- Don't Befriend Cancel allowing (new monster) to -----------------------------------------join you. Number of Monsters in Creche (no) * End of battle text:- ----- and company defeated (enemies)! Everybody gained (no.) point(s) of experience! Found (no.) Gold Pieces! * Placing skill points (if earned). This is very situational but I'll try to keep a list of those I've found (Ctrl+F IDX05 to find it). Select the one you want, and allocate points using the slider. Please distribute (monster)'s skill points. ========================================================================== =INTERFACES=========================================================IDX04= ========================================================================== The Interfaces sub-section can be searched too.
